Enterion

Defining a formulation strategy to optimise an orally delivered drug molecule often requires an insight into what happens to the drug molecule as it transits through the GI tract.  Key questions include:

  • Where does/can absorption of the drug molecule occur?
  • Is absorption restricted to the proximal small intestine, or can it occur in the distal small intestine and/or the colon?
  • Is the drug subject to metabolism in the GI tract?
  • Is the drug subject to efflux transport?
  • Is poor drug absorption because of poor solubility, poor permeability, or a combination of both?

All of these questions can be addressed using our proprietary EnterionTM technology.  Enterion capsules are remote controlled capsules that can be targeted to deliver a drug product to a precise region within the GI tract. A wide range of drug products can be delivered by Enterion. We have undertaken over 100 Enterion studies on all types of products including small molecules, peptides, and proteins, and the insights gained from these studies have supported the development of optimised formulations for many of the world’s leading pharmaceuticals.
