Radioactive Waste Management
Quotient Bioresearch has developed an electrochemical cell which uses the silver (II) ion to smoothly oxidise the mixed organic residues from radiosynthesis to [14C]carbon dioxide. The [14C]carbon dioxide produced is collected and recovered as high purity, low-specific activity calcium [14C]carbonate.
Some of the low-specific activity calcium [14C]carbonate can be re-cycled for use in the preparation of radiosynthesis precursors (typically [phenyl-U-14C]aromatic compounds) and in radiosynthesis development chemistry. The remaining low-specific activity calcium [14C]carbonate is consigned for long-term storage.
The use of this process has allowed Quotient Bioresearch to significantly reduce its environmental impact and waste costs – reducing costs to our customers.
